The Committee on Justice discussed the proposal at its 33rd extraordinary meeting of 27 January 2014.
And at it's 91st meeting of 31 January 2014 the Committee on EU Affairs of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia adopted the following Position:
The Republic of Slovenia welcomes the Proposal for a Directive and will strive for the adoption thereof. The Proposal lays down the right of a person not to be presented as guilty by public authorities before the final judgement, the fact that the burden of proof is on prosecution and that any reasonable doubts on the guilt should benefit the accused and the right of the accused to be informed of the accusation. The proposal is based on substantive correlation between the presumption of innocence and its related rights. If the related rights such as the right not to incriminate one-self, the right not to cooperate and the right to remain silent, the right to be present at one's trial are being violated, the right to be presumed innocent is clearly endangered. In case of persistent breach of presumption of innocence in the Member States, a fair trial could not be achieved. Presumption of innocence and its related rights contribute to this principle. This Directive, together with other rights of the Stockholm programme, will make an important contribution to materialising the principle of the right to a fair trial.
