The Bundesrat welcomes the Commission's initiative to promote gender equality and deems it necessary to have a clear strategy at EU level in order to achieve real equality of opportunity between the sexes throughout Europe and in all areas of society. It welcomes the strategy's focus on combating gender-based violence, sex discrimination and structural inequality between women and men.

The Bundesrat welcomes the Commission's public consultation on pay transparency and its commitment to table binding measures by the end of 2020. A Task Force on Equality should be established.
However, the Bundesrat criticizes the fact that the strategy does not acknowledge the existence of gender identities beyond the binary.

The Bundesrat shares the Commission's focus on strengthening the role of women worldwide and calls for the consistent implementation of the Gender Equality Strategy. This applies both to the individual EU member states and to the institutions of the EU itself.
